Template
A spreadsheet template for recording a tree inventory — twelve columns covering the fields most surveys need, with three example rows filled in so the format is obvious at a glance. Free to download, no email required.
What's in it
These are the same columns a LogLog project export produces, so if you start on the spreadsheet and later move to recording trees on-device, the format already matches. Multi-stem trees go in DBH as a comma-separated list rather than a summed or averaged figure — see the multi-stem tree glossary entry if that's new to you.
Tree # — Sequential ID, matches the number on your site plan
Species (common) — e.g. "Red Oak"
Species (botanical) — e.g. "Quercus rubra"
DBH (cm) — Comma-separated list for multi-stem trees, e.g. "24, 18, 12"
Height (m) — Estimated or measured
Crown spread N-S (m) — North-south canopy reach
Crown spread E-W (m) — East-west canopy reach
Condition — Good / Fair / Poor / Dead
Ownership — Private / Neighbouring / Park / RNFP / City
Action — Retain / Remove / Monitor / Treat / Transplant / Prune
Category — BS5837 A / B / C / U, where applicable
Notes — Defects, hazards, recommendations
Using it in the field
A spreadsheet template gets you organized, but it doesn't solve the two problems that actually cost time on a survey: matching photos to tree numbers, and transcribing handwritten field notes back at the office.
